This is the story of a 71 year old Mrs. Kiran Narula, she was paralysed below the neck and was suffering from difficulty in breathing. Once she fell down while returning home and broke her C4 and C5 in cervical region, she was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition which resulted in paralysis. The family members of Mrs. Narula knew about Max hospital, therefore they directly went to the hospital for further treatment. There they consulted Dr. V K Jain, he is the Senior Director of Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery at Max Hospitals Delhi and NCR. Dr. Jain investigated Mrs. Narula and found that she had broken her neck bone, and compressed the spinal cord leading to the severe spinal cord injury. Dr Jain suggested to do the surgery which involved removal of the broken bone and fix it further releasing the pressure from the spinal cord. As suggested by the surgeon, Mrs Narula agreed to go for the surgery.

The surgery took few hours and it was successfully done. It was a very severe injury for C4 and C5, the patient’s respiratory system was also affected, for this she was on ventilator. Gradually the ventilator was removed as Mrs. Narula started recovering and to help her breathing by her own surgeon has to do tracheostomy, which is none other than making a hole and inserting a tube to breathe. Also physiotherapy was also done for chest and limbs for fast recovery. After these procedures Mrs. Narula was suggested to move to her home as she was prone to the hospital borne infections.

Max hospital gave full facility for Mrs Narula, all the set up of ICU was done at her home also the nurses were provided from the hospital, the family members were unaware of what should be done in this situation as the things vary at home from the care taken at the hospital. According to the surgeons if the patient is at a stage where only physiotherapy and nurse care is required they are suggested to go home and rest of the treatment can be carried out from their home. In case of Mrs. Narula she required just BiPAP for respiration and that was also removed gradually. Subsequently she was given a speaking valve for tracheostomy and she was able to talk. These things very easy to be done at home. There were continous visits of the doctors and the physiotherapists to look after Mrs. Narula.

The entire family were extremely grateful to Max hospital for the services and treatment provided, which helped Mrs. Narula to recover soon after such a critical stage at a advanced age.

Thank you ,
