Over the years, healthcare research, education, technology in India have advanced and evolved. Application of technological advancement in the arena of healthcare has been very efficient. Especially in the area of neurosurgery, India has done pioneering work, providing excellent medical facilities and the doctors use the most progressive techniques and equipment for invasive surgeries and micro-surgical treatments.
Thus, India can proudly claim to offer comprehensive neurological surgeries and look after not only the domestic population but also the international patients.
Neurological surgery in India: the Silver Lining
Indian Medical Association (IMA) data says that approximately one hundred thousand different types of Neurological surgeries are performed in India each year, with an excellent rate of success; making India one of the most desirable countries for Neurosurgical procedures. This branch of medicine requires years of training and high level of meticulousness.
Neurosurgeons in India are of the highest quality and are well-known to deliver state-of-the-art surgical care in these specialized fields of neurosurgery. They have been educated at the leading institutes in India; following which, they undergo specialized training in well-known institutes around the world. These proficient surgeons have been offering the best treatments to patients from all around the world. It would, therefore, be hard to find a neurological ailment that an Indian neurosurgeon has not encountered or fixed.
Ratio of Neurosurgeons not meeting WHO Standards
The National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) reveals that Neurological disorders account for more than 20 percent of the world’s disease burden with a greater majority of people living in Africa affected. One of such countries is Sudan. Shortage of healthcare is very prevalent in Sudan. Although basic healthcare facilities are assured in the constitution of Sudan, the ground reality is quite opposite. Sudan faces acute shortage of medical staff due to ignorance, continual brain-drain and underfunding. The best medical staff has emigrated looking for better opportunities. The remnants do not have adequate medical capability to even provide the minimal healthcare needs for the ailing population of the country. Approximately, there are around 500 doctors in the south of Sudan, who have basic medical degree but no Post Graduate degree or specialized training.
The situation is not as good as for complex treatments such as neurological surgeries. Sudan has only a few neurosurgeons, with no practicing neurosurgeons in many provinces. This limits modern healthcare advancement. Sudan Association of Neurosurgeons says that there is only Neurosurgeon in Sudan who can perform Neuroendoscopic procedures. Thus, we can imagine the situation as the number of specialists working is negligible and doesn’t meet WHO standards.
Only a handful of neurosurgeons dictate and are able to command premium rates for conducting neurological surgeries. This makes it unaffordable for most unlike the well-off Sudanese who can easily afford the brain surgeries they need. But curtailing the compensation of these specialists would make them emigrate, making the situation further nightmarish. Therefore, for their surgical needs, the Sudanese have to look for places such as India, where such surgeries are readily available and at reasonable prices.
Neurosurgery patients from Sudan to India
Patients from Sudan have been traveling abroad for medical treatments for years now. Many travel to neighboring African countries such as South Africa, Mozambique, etc.; some travel to countries as far as India, Singapore, Dubai, etc. India has received several thousand medical value travelers from Sudan since 2010. The lower cost of healthcare in India compared to USA, UK and South Africa is the main aspect attracting attracts Sudanese to come all the way to India. A complex surgery could cost 30 percent lesser in India as it would in South Africa.
The growth potential of medical value travel business from Sudanese visiting India, for Neurosurgical procedures can be estimated. Neurosurgical procedures remain one of the top procedures for which international patients travel to India. If 2,000 Sudanese would visit India every year, out of that, about 200 would be visiting for neurosurgeries alone. Presently, over 10,000 patients travel to South Africa for their various treatments from Sudan. As per International Journal of Health Management and Tourism (IJHMT), there was inflow of around 200,000 medical tourists in India, in the year 2016. Cost and quality advantages are with India and medical value travel providers and hospitals in India are, therefore, giving South African hospitals a run for their money.
Sudanese travel to neighboring African countries primarily; for example in 2010 nearly 17,000 travelled to South Africa. But the cost of complex surgeries is about three times higher in South Africa compared to that in India. Most of the estimates show that treatment packages in India start at around a tenth of the price as compared to USA or UK. The findings by International Medical Travel Journal (IMTJ) show that the average range of savings in India is 65-90 percent. With such reasons in mind, several thousand Sudanese prefer to travel to India for their medical treatment. Further growth potential is huge.
The hospitals and medical staff in India have the right expertise and state-of-the-art equipment to conduct even the most complex neurological surgical procedures. A collaborated effort by Indian Hospitals, Medical Value Travel providers, along with Ministry of Health and Child care in Sudan would be necessary. India has the right attributes: adept doctors, advanced equipment and most importantly low cost to ensure that more and more Sudanese opt for India for neurosurgeries and other medical procedures.
