Specialities

List of Specialities at Artemis Hospital are:

  • Spine surgery

Kyphoplasty is a type of minimally invasive back spine surgery done in cases of vertebral fracture. The purpose of kyphoplasty is to:

  • Stabilize the vertebrae
  • Stop the pain related to the fracture
  • Restore vertebral body height

Kyphoplasty is successful with patient suffering with vertebral fracture because of the diminished bone strength. Usually, this means people with age related bone loss or osteoporosis. However, sometimes younger people with conditions affecting the bone strength may benefit from Kyphoplasty. Young people taking steroids will also have weaker bones thereby predisposing them to compression fractures.

Spine Decompression is a general term referring to various procedures which intents to relieve the symptoms caused by compression, pressure on the spinal cord and/or the nerve roots. Loosened ligaments, thickened joints, bulging or collapsed disks and bony growths can narrow the spinal canal and the nerve openings to cause irritation.

Common techniques for decompression are:

  • Laminotomy or Laminectomy: Removes the small part of the bony arches of the spinal canal called as lamina. Removing the lamina increases the size of the spinal canal and hence relieves the pressure. Laminotomy involves removal of just a section of the lamina while Laminectomy includes removing the entire lamina.

  • Diskectomy: Removes a portion of the disk to relieve the pressure on the nearby nerve roots.

  • Osteophyte removal: Removes bony growth called as osteophytes or bone spurs.

  • Foraminotomy or foraminectomy: Both are performed to expand the openings for the nerve roots to exit the spinal cord by removing some bone and tissue. Generally, a foraminectomy refers to a procedure to remove a large amount of bone and tissue.

  • Corpectomy: Remove the body of vertebrae as well as the disks.

Nucleoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure to treat the patients symptomatic with leg pain and low back pain due to herniated disc which didn’t improve after about three months of conservative therapy such as pain medication, rest and physical therapy.

Cervical disc replacement is indicated for a patient with symptomatic cervical disc causing arm weakness or numbness with some degree of neck pain and arm pain. The symptoms may be due to osteophytes or a herniated disc compressing the spinal cord or the adjacent nerves.

Lumbar disc replacement is an emerging treatment option for some types of low back pain. It is similar to other kinds of joint replacement and the goal is to remove the damaged and painful disc and replace with a metal and a plastic implant which is designed to move as a normal disc.

  • Neurosurgery

The Neurosurgeons at Artemis Hospital use their vast expertise in the Neurosurgery to diagnose and treat the disorders of the nervous system affecting the whole body, the brain, the spine, legs, arms, hands and face. The Neurosurgery department at Artemis Hospital offers the most advanced surgical treatment along with non-surgical approaches to restore the patient’s health and relieve their pain. Neurosurgeons perform the minimally invasive surgeries of the spine and the skull base.

Insertion of ventricular shunts for normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) or endoscopic third ventriculostomy or obstructive hydrocephalus, wherever applicable.

Complex vascular diseases such as Arterio-venous malformation (AVM), Aneurysm

Brain

Brain tumors, both benign and malignant

Awake craniotomy in case the tumor is located in an eloquent area of the brain.

Traumatic head injuries: brain contusion, subdural, intracerebral hematomas, epidural, depressed fracture.

Cervical Spine

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion with instrumentation during which the cervical disc and/or spur are removed and after removal of the disc it is fused with instrumentation

Treatment of Posterior Decompression of the cervical vertebrae

Insertion of artificial discs for cervical disc herniation and/or degeneration

Posterior Fusion of the cervical vertebrae

Lumbar Spine

Decompressive Laminectomy with or without fusion and/or instrumentation is a surgery done to treat spinal stenosis and relieve pressure on the spinal cord or spinal nerves.

Microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive spine procedure done on the lumbar spine using a very small incision. It involves removing only the portion of the ruptured disc that is pinching the spinal nerve causing pain. This surgery is done under operating microscope.

Posterior and Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion is a procedure in which the surgeon joins or fuses two lumbar vertebrae which helps to stabilize the vertebrae in this part of the spine.

Laminectomy involves removal of the bone and/or thickened tissue that is narrowing the spinal canal and squeezing the spinal cord and nerves. Sometimes it is done along with it foraminotomy to relieve the pressure on exiting nerve root. This procedure is performed by surgically cutting into the back.

Thoracic Spine

Discectomy involves removal of a portion of the disc from the spine to release the pressure on the nerve.

Kyphoplasty/Vertebroplasty for fracture is a minimally invasive treatment in which the orthopaedic balloons are used to gently elevate the fractured vertebrae as an attempt to return it to the correct position.

Peripheral Nerve

During the peripheral nerve trauma surgery, the help of nerve stimulator the pathological area is found out and treated accordingly sometimes with nerve grafting. The finest suture material that is even thinner than a hair is used.

Carpal Tunnel Release is a surgery to treat carpal tunnel syndrome that is weakness and pain in the hand caused by pressure on the median nerve at the wrist.

Peripheral nerve sheath tumor involves the removal of tumor from a peripheral nerve which is sometimes quite challenging. The goal is total removal of the tumor without altering the normal function of the nerve. The tumors can be benign or malignant. Malignant tumor will be managed with the helped of Experienced Oncologists.

During the Ulnar Nerve Transposition, it will move the affected nerve by creating a new tunnel for it in order to relieve pain and pressure.

Pain

Spinal Cord Stimulator is a treatment used for chronic pain. During this treatment, a small stimulator sends the signals to your spinal cord to keep the pain messages from being sent to your brain.

Pediatric Diseases

During the Tethered Cord surgery, which is done under microscope, the tethering of the spinal cord, is removed thereby allows the normal growth of the spinal cord and restores function of the limbs.

Tumors- The common pediatric tumors like craniopharyngioma, medulloblastoma or Astrocytoma are always challenging. The surgical removal is followed by treatment by a multidisciplinary team.
